Just wanted to add another one to the list of readings on this topic, Melissa Parker 'Rethinking female circumcision' is an interesting read, it is based on Melissa's field work in Northern Sudan, this paper address' the fundamental point that

"greater attention should be paid to understanding the source of the emotions and the way in which they influence field work and data analysis"(506).

I must say that I think this point is applicable across the field of anthropology, and in Melissa's article on female circumcision it is very well applied. How does the researchers own understanding of the world and all the prejudices (however subtle) therein influence their understanding and analysis of others understanding of the world?

For more reading on the status of the government's attempt to ban female genital cutting in Egypt, and some on-the-ground efforts to change local attitudes about female genital aesthetics and the necessity of the procedure, see: http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5jUPmjsbBS7ci0dIjRL33BR3vvc8A. It's also a reminder that this is a tradition that crosses religious groups, as both Coptic Christians and Muslims practice female genital cutting.
